Small Business Spotlight: Borne Bare

Today’s spotlight is featuring a dear friend of mine from back in school who has started her own business! Mia founded Borne Bare after her own little one was born and I’ve been smitten with her stuff ever since (and her adorable daughter!). If you find yourself needing an adorable bonnet for your own little, or a little one dear to your heart, these cute and practical styles will surely serve them well!

Family Photo Outfitting

It’s about time I finally got around to writing this post! This past Thanksgiving my family and I decided it was finally time to get some proper family photos taken (the last one we have is from when I was in 2nd grade and had the biggest gap tooth imaginable, I’m serious, I could fit two nickels side by side between them!). Since we kids have all spread out across the country since moving out, and would be back together for Thanksgiving, we decided to take the plunge and wrangle everyone then.

Anyone who has taken, or is planning to take family photos knows that sometimes the hardest part is just getting everyone’s outfits picked out. What seems so simple turns into a whole thing, meanwhile, in the end you just want one photo where everyone looks nice, is actually smiling, and hopefully nobody blinks!

Small Business Spotlight: Sal's Scrunchies

They say trends always come back around, and as a stylist I can definitely confirm that statement! While certain trends are a bit harder to pull off, the scrunchie is so effortless, fun, and not to mention low commitment (it’s not like you’re shaving the side of your head!).

One of my best girlfriends started a handmade scrunchie business and I have to say, I’m obsessed! I already have a handful of her scrunchies (the suede and faux leather are my go to styles) and I knew I had to share the fun with you all!

Client Styling: Michael L.

If you are a long time follower of my blog this guy may look a little familiar;P

In true photographer fashion, Michael doesn’t often get in front of the camera but I was able to talk him into a styling session recently and I’m happy to report it went well (I was able to take the photos, a testament to his teaching, and he was able to crack a smile just often enough for me to catch a few)!

Small Business Spotlight: mrly

For something a little different this Small Business Saturday I’m featuring a childrenswear brand. This brand and I have a very funny history: I was actually an intern when I first worked with the co-founders, and boy, does that make me feel both old and very lucky to have had the experience before they split off from that company to start this awesome children’s clothing line! Not only that, but my amazing boyfriend (and photographer) has also worked with them in the past, so it’s safe to say they are close to our little unit over here!

Small Business Spotlight: cuffed by nano

To continue to shine a light on small businesses I personally adore, it seemed silly not to feature a business I have the pleasure of being a brand ambassador for right now!

I have always loved small dainty jewelry and mixing metal tones and I feel like cuffed really hits both those marks for me! They offer gorgeous dainty necklaces (you can even customize their bling bar style!) and super easy to wear pieces like cuff bracelets, rings and small earrings. Most of her styles also come in multiple metal options so you can mix and match to your hearts content!

Wearing it Multiple Ways: Top with Full Sleeves

I get asked a lot about how to style things multiple ways and/or how to know if something is worth the money to buy. To me, these things go hand in hand, if I can’t style it at least a few different ways it’s probably not worth my money (or yours!).

For me, this top is the epitome of something that would spark one of the above questions; its a print (already tough for some to get on board with), has trendy full sleeves (also a sticky point for some folks) and was a bit more of a splurge item for essentially a long sleeve tee shirt (Anthropologie, I love you but my wallet sometimes does not haha). Even with all that though, I love it. It brings me joy and I probably wear it at least once every two weeks.

Small Business Spotlight: Handcrafted FCD

I am so excited to announce a new series here on Backseat Styling that will be spotlighting small businesses! I am very passionate about supporting local businesses and I wanted a way to highlight some of my favorites that are very near and dear to me right here on the blog so you all can enjoy them as well!

For our first small business spotlight I choose a business that is especially dear to me; Handcrafted FCD. Not only do I own and love her bags but I also used to work for her sewing them back in the day (so I can testify to the love and care that goes into each one!) .

Party Attire: Goldfish Edition!

When thinking about what would make me happiest to wear for New Years Eve, the obvious choice was something sparkly, but I was also thinking about a goal of mine for the new year as well: wearing more color. So when I walked into Zara and found this beauty I knew this was the dress.

Client Styling: Ryan S.

This is Ryan: dancer, creative generalist and man bun pro. Now, you may remember Ryan from his guest post about men’s fashion essentials if you’ve been reading for a while, but if you don’t, you can find it here. Ryan is an incredibly talented and busy individual but in addition to contributing his words of wisdom he was also kind enough to make time for a styling session a while back.

Client Styling: Josh S.

Meet Josh, he's the first male client I've been able to feature here on the blog and I hope you all enjoy seeing how our styling session went!

Josh and I were lucky enough to work together at my previous employer and I think he has the most interesting job! Josh is a professional fit model, basically a "human mannequin" and we would fit all of our clothing on him (lucky guy always has a closet full of clothes that fit perfectly!).  It was so fun to hang out and put together some outfits for him since he has so much fun stuff to choose from!

Capsule Closet: All Hype or Useful Tool?

I know capsule closets have been a huge trend the past few years. I have toyed around with the idea of going to one full time myself, the never ending battle of "I have a million things but not one outfit to wear" gets to all of us at one point or another!

I finally got my chance to try my hand at creating a capsule closet for real when we moved out to California. We stayed in corporate housing for the first month while we looked for our new apartment, which was great, but the caveat was that we would need to live out of our suitcases for a month before our stuff from home was delivered. I had one large suitcase in which to fit all my stuff for the whole month (and I was interviewing at the time, so work/interviewing clothes, home clothes and going out clothes were needed)

Client Styling: Taylor W.

This is Taylor: she's a super talented graphic designer by day, an adorable puppy parent and she owns a VW beetle named "Hoff" (hilarious am I right?!). This lady is also a hella good chameleon, she looks beast as all get out in the gym (#goals) and also manages to look lovely and elegant in bridal gowns (she used to work in a bridal boutique!). May we all be as lucky:P

Client Styling: Hanna C.

Let me introduce you to Hanna; she's often found kayaking with her husband and their pup Chip (follow his adventures @chip_the_shiba) or exploring her adorable neighborhood. I was so excited to work with Hanna because she always manages to look effortless and has a really fun personality that I couldn't wait to show off!

Client Styling: Amy T.

This is Amy; she is the definition of a social butterfly (I swear, girlfriend knows EVERYONE!), is always laughing, and she is quite possibly the proudest Canadian I know. She is such a happy soul and I was so stoked to work with her for this session!

Client Styling: Lauryn S.

This is Lauryn; she's a Yelp review queen, red lipstick gal and Anthony Bourdain super fan (seriously, she has a signed photo on her wall!). Lauryn is the person you go to when you need a recommendation for a new place to check out for dinner and drinks, validation on your sunglass purchase and or girl chat over a glass of wine.

Client Styling: Maria S.

Meet Maria, she's the edgiest ex-cheerleader I know, dog mom to the Rebel, cutest french bulldog ever (photos of her to will be plentiful I promise!), and the girl can flip a house like you wouldn't believe. Seriously, her house is beautiful, proof in the photos.

Men's Fashion Essentials - Guest Post by Ryan Shaw

I’m not proclaiming to be any sort of style guru, and generally my sense of style favors the absurdly bold, which I know is not for everyone.  But over the years, through travel, work, and just a vested interest in the fashion world, I have become something of a style consultant to most of my friends, and even a few strangers.  In truth, I’m not really sure how I ended up in this role because really I just wear whatever I want, but I guess it works a good amount of times, and it’s been a lot of fun getting to throw clothes at my friends and force them to try all of it on.

But I do think that there are a few essential pieces that all modern millennial dudes should own. Keep in mind that this list may not be for everyone.
